Loading Procedures

Cannoneers take their positions according to this diagram.

 

At the command "Commence firing," the Gunner orders "Load.

Number 1 sponges the tube, while Number 3 holds his thumb on the vent.

Number 2 takes a round from Number 5 and places it in the muzzle.

Number 1 rams the round home, with Number 3 holding his thumb on the vent.

The gunner sights the cannon.

When the gun was loaded, 3 moves to the trail and moves it left or right with the trail spike as directed by the gunner.

Number 5 retrieves another round from Number 6 or 7 at the limber.

The gunner steps clear to the side of the piece to observe the effect of fire, and gives the command "Ready."

Numbers 1 and 2 step clear.

Number 3 punctures the cartridge with the vent pick.

Number 4 attaches the lanyard to a friction primer and inserted the primer in the vent.

Number 3 covers the vent with his left thumb while 4 pulls the lanyard taut.

At nod from 4 that he is ready, 3 steps clear of the wheel.

At the gunner's command "Fire,"

Number 4 yanks the lanyard.

The gunner orders the cannon run back up and the process is repeated until the command "Cease firing."
