I served as the D Company, 3-8 Cav, 3rd Armored
Division CAT 87 Master Gunner and as a CAT Master Gunner for
the 4-8 Cav team.
My CAT 87 Photographs
Prior to D Company, 3-8 CAV's selection as a
possible CAT 87 competitor, I served as D Company Master Gunner
and Platoon Sergeant for 1st Platoon. For the CAT competition,
I was moved to Battalion Headquarters as the CAT Training
Master Gunner. I worked with the Battalion Master Gunner,
SFC Richard Bleakley. We setup and ran many local training
exercises and several "Kitty CAT" mini competitions.

Although 3-8 CAV won all of our mini competitions,
4-8 CAV was selected as the 3rd Armored Division representative.
Their selection was based on a blind drawing made by a German
General officer. At that time it was very hard to believe
this selection was based on a blind draw of unit names from
a hat. We felt, given our training results, that we should
have been selected. However, we could do nothing so we moved
on.
Richard and I were asked by 4-8 CAV to join
their team and provide Master Gunner support to them. We joined
the team in Graffenwohr, German to scout range construction
and layout changes for the team.
